Sir Nigel Gresley was the designer of the A4 class steam engines, of which Union of South Africa, Mallard and, confusingly, Sir Nigel Gresley (named after him to celebrate his 100th engine), were all individual engines. And they were fast: the Mallard held the world speed record at 126mph, although this was challenged by German and American engines, because they claimed the Mallard had run on a slight incline while they had achieved (slightly lesser) speeds on the flat.
